Madonsela says being called a "spy" has hurt her reputation and she is not taking the accusation sitting down.

Our former Public Protector, who received an honorary Doctorate in Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Westville yesterday, was tightlipped though about who she will be suing.

Madonsela says any money she should receive as a result of the lawsuit will be donated to the Action for Inclusion Fund.

Meanwhile, students, graduates, their guests and other dignitaries were treated to speeches by both Madonsela and Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.

Mogoeng is the current Chancellor at UKZN.

Both speakers touched on the current levels of violence in South Africa.

Mogoeng said South Africans are not xenophobic, adding that the root cause of the violence must always be identified.

He said the current spate of violence, as well as previous cases, correlated with economic difficulties, suggesting people often resorted to crime as a means of survival.

Madonsela said the violence goes against the concept of ubuntu and could be viewed as being part of the country's difficult and often complex past.

She said South Africans need to focus on rebuilding the notion of ubuntu within communities.
