Former KZN teacher appears in court for fraud

A woman has appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court after fraudulently working as a teacher for almost 10 years.

Thembisile Phungula allegedly submitted a fraudulent matric certificate and a teaching diploma to the Education Department. 


The 41-year-old was arrested last Friday and briefly appeared in court yesterday. 


Hawks spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo says her case was postponed to the 26th of February.

"She faces charges of fraud. This is following her arrest by the Hawks members of the Durban Serious Commercial Crime where it was discovered that she used fraudulent documents to apply for the teacher's post at Msinga High School in 2011. 


The department suffered a financial loss of approximately R122 493.00 which was paid to her as a salary. She was granted R2000.00 bail.
