Foot and mouth outbreak threatens livestock sector
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Red Meat Producers Association says it is worried about the current outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Zimbabwe.
The association says the country's agriculture industry cannot afford to lose its Foot and Mouth Free Zone status.
Zimbabwe shares a border with South Africa in Limpopo - an area where the association says many livestock cross.
Spokesperson Gerhard Schuette says the current drought situation is already negatively affecting the industry.
"The loss is trade loss and that takes a very, very long time to recover. The previous one took us almost four years to recover from because it's all about our status at the International Animal Healthcare Organisation," he says.
