Experts warn against risky festive behaviour

Experts have warned South Africans to exercise caution during the festive season, as having extra time and money can contribute to harmful and potentially addictive behaviours.

Occupational therapists from Netcare Akeso Parktown say that after a year of hard work and stress, MANY people look forward to rewarding themselves, relaxing, and enjoying additional treats during the holiday period.

Mahlatse Mothogoane says many individuals feel as though they have unlimited time and finances during this period, making it difficult to set and maintain personal limits.

He says overindulgence is often driven by loneliness, boredom, impulsivity, and attempts to cope with uncomfortable emotions.

Mothogoane warns that this sometimes leads to increased substance use which could lead to risky behaviour.

“If we have to introduce substances into the mix, substances just cloud our judgement. We might potentially drink and drive, find ourselves in risky situations like gambling, going to neighbourhoods that we are unfamiliar with. We lack judgement to review our decisions; we just work on an impulse, I see something that I like, and I have money, so I purchase it and later regret that decision when I see my money going down.”

Ariska Singh says there are strategies for coping with the dangers of impulsivity at this traditionally indulgent time.

She says it is important to stick to a routine.

“Whether it is just getting up at a meaningful time, attending gym, or doing some sort of exercise, dedicating time to doing meaningful occupations, spending time with family, going to the park, or just doing things to almost keep you in a sense of routine.

“The last important one would be looking at an exit strategy. If you find yourself in uncomfortable situations in family events, it’s important to plan ahead, know your cut off time and know that you will not be forced into spending more time than you want to.”
