The boys, aged 16 and 17, were among 13 learners expelled over violence and serious allegations of drug dealing on the school grounds.

The Grade 10 and 11 pupils were ordered not to return to St Francis College next year.

KZN Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu intervened, and after discussions with the school, nine pupils were allowed back.

Mshengu says he feels, in some cases, expulsion is not the answer and has appealed to communities and families to work with the school in resolving issues.

"As the Department of Education we are obliged by the South African's schools act that even if we expel a learner, we must find another school for him or her. Now it doesn't assist them to keep moving one problem from one school to another."

"We need to address the issue as it were, that is why we are even exploring different means with different stakeholders to partner with us to ensue that we succeed in ensuring discipline in our learners," he said.
