eThekwini tackles living conditions at Glebelands
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
eThekwini has announced interventions to improve safety and living conditions at Durban's notorious Glebelands Hostel.
Mayor, Zandile Gumede told an Executive Council meeting yesterday that the Glebelands Community Residential Units - which are the older buildings - need to be rebuilt.
Gumede says the poor living conditions and the deteriorating state of infrastructure have contributed to crime at the hostel.

Her spokesperson, Mthunzi Gumede says the municipality will start with work on the hostel next month.
"We will be implementing a clean-up campaign in the hostel. The mayor has requested that there should be an increase in the number of people who are cleaning that hostel. The mayor has also requested a head of housing to speak to hostel management so that we are able to deal with issues of maintenance. People cannot be living in such conditions," he says.
The hostel has been the scene of killings - some of them politically-motivated.
Since 2014, 93 murders have occurred at Glebelands.
