eThekwini assists storm affected communities

eThekwini mayor, Zandile Gumede says the municipality has been assisting communities south of Durban, which were among the worst affected areas during last week's storm.

Gumede says relief efforts will continue this week.

"We are going to be on the ground with volunteers and other departments distributing blankets, food parcels and other items to the communities that have been declared areas of disaster by the provincial and national governments," she said.

The storm has claimed the lives of more than a dozen people.

Hundreds of homes, businesses, schools and hospitals were severely damaged by the flooding and strong winds.

Meanwile, Gumede says it is going to costs millions to repair the damage across Durban.

"We compared the list with our disaster centre and for all the damage, we are estimating for now between R400-million and R500-million by the time all the costing has been done, she said.
