More than one 1.2 million Eskom customers no longer experience load reduction.

The power utility has revealed seven provinces are now free from the restrictions.

Eskom says 71% of the households targeted under its Load Reduction Eradication Programme have been restored to normal supply.

Load reduction is a targeted local power cut implemented by Eskom and municipalities to protect transformers from exploding due to illegal connections and high usage during peak hours.

KZN, Gauteng still affected

The utility says this operational practice remains necessary in some high-risk areas because of illegal connections, electricity theft and meter tampering, which can overload and damage infrastructure.

Some areas in KZN and Gauteng remain on a load reduction schedule, but Eskom says it’s on track to end the restrictions in the rest of the provinces by October.

It’s revealed the plan is part of a broader programme aimed at eliminating load reduction by next year.
