Esikhawini's electricity supply cut over illegal connections
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Eskom has cut Esikhawini's power supply as teams from the utility get to work to dismantle illegal connections in the north coast township.
The power utility says it has to do this because the connections and meter tampering are overloading the system.
Close to 30 illegal connections have been removed since Eskom began conducting audits in the area last week.
But the move has sparked violent protests, with some angry residents vandalising utility's equipment.

The power producer says, aside from the huge financial loss, the illegal connections can cause electrocution.
Meanwhile, the City of uMhlathuze's Mayor has met with Eskom and asked that power supply in Esikhawini be restored as soon as possible.
He says it can deal with illegal connections later.
