Fossil fuels, chemical industries responsible for health problems: Environmental group
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance says it's asked government to put together a programme of action to move away from fossil fuels and chemical industries.
The alliance says these are the major causes of certain health problems being experienced by communities in the Durban south area, and elsewhere.

It comes as the World Health Organization is calling for urgent action against air pollution - with its report finding that nine out of 10 people globally are breathing poor quality air.

The alliance's Desmond D'Sa says a study conducted in 2006 showed a rise in health problems such as asthma and cancer in south Durban where there are a number of refineries.
"We need to take the plunge now, and start looking at alternatives and alternative visions for cities, and moving away from fossil fuels that has plagued the world, and plagued our country with mining and oil and gas. These industries impact on health first, but they also impact on the environment," he said.
