Environmental Affairs department on mission to curb rhino poaching

The Department of
Environmental Affairs says it will do all it can to ensure rhino species are
not wiped out under its watch.
The department says it has strengthened relationships with international communities, authorities and other countries to help end the illegal trade of rhino horn.

Yesterday marked the 9th World Rhino Day, established to promote a global response to rhino poaching.
Environmental Affairs' Albi Modise says their biggest struggle is the illicit wildlife trade, fuelling poaching related crimes from outside the country.

Modise says they have established anti-poaching agreements with countries such as China, Vietnam and Mozambique.
"For us to ensure that we are able to detect if any particular rhino horn or any particular ayurvedic product leaves our shores without authorisation, the partnership we have struck with [the Endangered Wildlife Trust]... assists us in ensuring that there are no illegally possessed rhino horns that leave our country," he said.
