Energy expert calls for Gordhan removal amid load shedding crisis

An energy expert has called for the removal of Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, as we go into another week of rolling blackouts.

Tshepo Kgadima says Gordhan has shown himself to be incapable of leading the ministry.


The struggling power utility is switching between the stage 3 and stage 4 load shedding schedules this week. 


In his weekly newsletter, President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned there's no quick fix for the crisis, but says some progress has been made. 


Kgadima says whatever progress there has been at Eskom, it's come in spite of Gordhan. 


Kgadima has shared what he believes must be done at Eskom.

"He must cancel the take-or-pay coal supply contracts which are for the volume of 20 million tonnes thereabout which Eskom pays for but never takes delivery. 


"He must stopped the immediate usage of diesel, and he must return to service the 15 000 megawatts of base load coal fired stations which which have been mothballed in order to give us a lasting solution to the problem of following blackouts, so that this economy once and for all can have certainty in terms of the projection for growth and job creation."
