Probe underway after elderly man's body found on crashed yacht
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
Investigations are underway into what caused the death of a 69-year-old man, whose body was found inside a yacht that ran aground on a south coast beach yesterday.
Authorities made the discovery at Southbroom Beach in the morning. They believe the French national had been the only sailor on the "Cherch' Ou L.S" when it crashed.
Response teams say the vessel’s sails had been battered and torn.
They are still trying to make contact with the man’s family. Medevac Response Service's Glen Preston says the yacht originally sailed from Papua New Guinea.
"There is no evidence that suggests there were other passengers onboard, so it looks like it was a lone sailor", he said.
"On the documentation we recovered it looked like he left Port Elizabeth harbour a few days ago and that was the last contact he had with anybody", Preston.
