E-hailing operators in South Africa will soon be listed on a digital platform as part of the government's efforts to improve accountability in the e-hailing industry.

Minister Barbara Creecy has added that the registration of e-hailing vehicle owners and drivers is almost complete.

She says all e-hailing platforms are expected to register with the Universal Consumer Association of South Africa within the next week.

Creecy was speaking at the launch of October Transport Month on Thursday.

“There was a meeting with Uber, and it now appears that within the next week or so, all the e-hailing platforms will be registered with ECASA.”

She says the system will help the government know who is operating in the industry.

Will public transport become cheaper?

Meanwhile, Creecy says the department is working to make public transport more affordable, as households and transport operators continue to feel the impact of rising costs and fuel prices.

Creecy says the geopolitical environment has affected supply chains, trade routes and the fuel price.

“The integration of passenger and road transport systems is central to improving affordability and safety for commuters.

“Bus and minibus taxi operators remain central to our transport system. We are in the process of reforming our public transport grant system into a unified support model available on selected routes.”

The minister is expected to visit the Durban Gateway Terminal (DGT), where she will meet terminal management and receive an update on operational matters.
