Durban woman helps deliver baby on backseat of car
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
A Durban woman who helped deliver a baby on Thursday says what she has
learnt from watching TV and movies helped her through the situation.
The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, says she heard her neighbour shouting for help.
The neighbour's helper, Ntankiseng Ralike had gone into labour and needed urgent assistance.
She says they drove Ralike to the nearest clinic in Parlock, north of the city.
She said there was not enough time when they arrived at the clinic, as the baby girl was ready to be born.
The baby had to be delivered on the backseat of the car.
“I didn’t know what to do, but I slowly took the baby out. The umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck. She wasn’t crying.”
The woman says she then removed the cord from around the baby’s neck. I was terrified. I took the baby out and she started crying.
“It was the most amazing moment when she started crying,” she said.
Ralike was then taken to King Dinizulu Hospital, where doctors examined her and the baby.
Mother and baby got to go home today yesterday - and both are said to be doing well.
