Durban set for new cruise terminal by 2020

Transnet National Port Authority has concluded an agreement that will see KwaZulu Cruise Terminal (KCT) finance, construct, operate, maintain and transfer a new cruise terminal facility in the Port of Durban.

The project is expected to be delivered by October 2020.

The parties signed off on the R200-million-plus project yesterday.

KCT was announced as the preferred bidder for the 25-year concession project last year. The company is a joint venture between MSC Cruises SA and Africa Armada Consortium, an investment company that empowers its black financiers through participation in economic activities.

Transnet's Shulami Qalinge says they are delighted to have concluded terms that will benefit all parties, but most importantly the city of Durban as a growing cruise destination.

"In doing so, we will truly be positioning Durban as a ‘Smart Port City’ and a world-class cruise capital," she said.

Transnet is confident the project will create a brand new cruise terminal in the city that will create jobs, implement new technologies and boost tourism numbers for the city and country.

The new terminal will coincide with the expansion of the beachfront promenade from uShaka Marine World to the harbour mouth, as well as the further development of the Durban Point Waterfront.

The design phase kicks off this month, with construction expected to be completed in time for the 2020/2021 cruise season.

Qalinge says the new terminal will help attract larger vessels and more leading cruise liners to South Africa.
