KwaZulu-Natal Education's Muzi Mahlambi says the learners had been suspended while their disciplinary hearing was taking place.
"The Head of Department has applied his mind to the recommendation and concurs with the decision to expel these five learners with the effect from today.
"These learners will remain expelled. It is kind of an unfortunate situation, but we think it's a punishment enough to say they have been moved from the environment that they are used to, to start afresh in another environment," says Mahlambi.
This week, two girls from a school in Zululand were suspended over an alleged bullying incident.
Mahlambi has reiterated violent behaviour won't be tolerated.
