KwaZulu-Natal police say two suspects were shot dead and another arrested after an armed robbery and shootout with officers in Durban’s Sydenham area
Authorities in KZN say two suspects killed in a shootout with police in Durban's Sydnenham area were in the middle of an armed robbery. The pair was shot dead on Burnwood Road on Thursday afternoon.
KZN SAPS spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda, says officers saw three suspects in a white car robbing a man of his belongings.
" Police reacted, and realizing the presence of police, the suspects drove off.
"Their vehicle collided with a minibus taxi and they abandoned it. During the confrontation, a shootout ensued between police and the suspects. Two suspects were shot and fatally wounded, and one was arrested. He will face charges of armed robbery and attempted murder on police officers.”
He says no police officer was injured during the shootout.
Meanwhile in the North West Province
Eleven suspects are due to appear in the Swartruggens Magistrate's Court on Friday after police discovered what they say is a R1 billion-rand drug laboratory.
The group includes five Mexican nationals, two Mozambican nationals, one Zimbabwean, and three South African citizens.
Police uncovered the suspected methamphetamine lab this week and seized chemicals, manufacturing equipment and three firearms during the operation.
Who has been arrested?
The son of the property owner and several relatives are among those who were nabbed.
National Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale says authorities are still searching for the owner.
Charges the suspects are facing
“The group is facing charges related to drug manufacturing, which carries a minimum sentence of up to 25 years’ imprisonment if convicted, illegal possession of precious metals, illegal possession of hazardous materials, and contravention of the Immigration Act.”
