Durban Metro Police officer suspended over alleged fake job scam
An investigation found that the officer allegedly accepted money from members of the public by falsely promising employment in the Metro Police.
A Durban Metro Police officer has been suspended for allegedly selling fake job opportunities within the eThekwini Municipality.
The eThekwini Metro Police Department says the suspension follows an investigation by the City's Integrity and Investigation Directorate.
Criminal charges possible
According to preliminary findings, the officer allegedly solicited and accepted money from members of the public by falsely promising them jobs within the Metro Police.
Officials say none of the individuals who paid money formed part of the municipality's legitimate recruitment process or the current intake.
The officer is facing disciplinary action, as well as criminal charges.
Metro Police commissioner Sibonelo Mchunu has warned the public that buying or selling jobs is a criminal offence and has urged job seekers to apply only through official recruitment channels.
