Durban man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping 12-year-old neighbour

A Durban magistrate has sentenced a man to life in prison for raping a child.
The court found the 36-year-old guilty of assaulting the 12-year-old on New Year's Eve, five years ago.
The sentence was handed down on Tuesday.
Victim lived next door
KZN police spokesperson Thenjiswa Ngcobo says the child's family were his neighbours.
"On 31 December 2021, the now convicted rapist lured the little girl to his flat where he raped her.
Mother takes action after hearing details of the ordeal
"The child did not report the matter to her parent, however the attentive mother overhead her child narrating the rape ordeal to her friend and she reported the matter to the police.
"The Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences detectives investigated the matter and ensured that the rapist spends the rest of his life in jail. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm," said Ngcobo.
