Durban man sentenced for defrauding SARS out of millions

A Durban man has been given a seven-year sentence after pleading guilty to defrauding SARS out of over R3 million.
It's understood 60-year-old Kaniga Chetty and another person entered into a scheme to defraud the revenue service by submitting fraudulent VAT claims.

This was done under the name of Chetty’s dormant company, Targatrix (Pty) Ltd.
The NPA's Natasha Kara says four returns were submitted claiming the refunds.
"Chetty was arrested after the SARS detected fraud when conducting a comprehensive VAT audit on the company."

"The NPA welcomed this successful prosecution. Tax fraud is indeed a serious offence. Taxes collected by the SARS is used by government to finance its infrastructural, economic and social objectives. The NPA will continue to monitor these cases.”
