Durban house fire: Domestic worker praised for saving toddlers
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The eThekwini Fire Department says a domestic worker is responsible for saving the lives of two Durban North toddlers from a burning home.
The three-year-old twin brother and sister were rushed to hospital after they had suffered severe burns to their bodies - moments before firefighters arrived to contain the fire at their Swapo Road home.
The domestic worker was also rushed to Addington Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The department's Jesse Yasudas says the children had both suffered 50% burns to their body.
"If those kids were not brought out soon - they would have suffered fatal injuries. The fire damage was to the upstairs three bedrooms, en suite and general bathroom. The firefighters got in in good time to prevent fires spreading to the bottom level of the house," he said.
