Bus drivers have blocked several key transport routes in the municipality.

They've parked their vehicles on the N2 and M4 northbound carriageways in the vicinity of the old Durban International Airport severely affecting traffic travelling from Amanzimtoti towards Durban.

Roads have also been blockaded in Umlazi in the vicinity of the Mega City while Queen Nandi Drive and Malandela Road in KwaMashu are also affected.

EThekwini's Tozi Mthethwa has pleaded with the commuters to bear with them.

"We are aware of the disruption in our bus services and we ask commuters to be aware of this and as best as possible use alternative travelling arrangements.

"Motorists are also being asked to be aware of the delays and to use alternative routes where possible. We do apologise to the commuters and the general public in eThekwini as far as this inconvenience is concerned," she said.

While the exact grievances behind this morning's bus strike are still to be established, similar protest action was staged in recent weeks when bus drivers were not paid their December salaries and bonuses by bus operator Tansnat.
