Durban beaches sand replenishment underway

eThekwini says its sand pumping operations to replenish some of Durban’s central beaches are underway.
The municipality closed portions of several beaches on Friday to allow for the much-needed operations. Parts of some popular beaches have been closed.
Sand replenishment operations will take place at these locations for the next four weeks.
Durban's central beaches have grabbed headlines recently, with many people concerned about the impact of erosion of promenade infrastructure. Municipal spokesperson, Mandla Nsele, says no beach visits will be allowed by members of the public.
"During the replenishment operation bathing and other beach use will not be allowed in the affected beaches. The operation is expected last for about four weeks," he said.
"We urge beachgoers to be patient during this process and to comply with the temporary restrictions," Nsele said.
Affected beaches include North, Dairy, Country Club and Battery beaches. The city’s central beaches have been battling a shortage of beach sand as a result of severe erosion.
eThekwini says the issue has been caused by climate change and illegal sand mining.
