Drugs found during raid at Durban police barracks

Drugs and counterfeit DVDs have been discovered during a pre-dawn raid on the police barracks on Peter Mokaba Road, formerly Ridge Road, in Durban.
The bust at Excelsior Court comes just days after a similar swoop on the barracks at the Durban Central Police Station.
115 people were arrested and fined for trespassing during that raid.
Two corruption dockets were also opened after police established that some of the rooms, which are meant to house SAPS officials, were allegedly being rented out to civilians.
Police spokesperson Jay Naicker says two people were taken into custody during this morning's raid.
"Members of various operational units descended on the premises during the early hours of this morning. A cordon and search operation was conducted and all the rooms were searched," said Naicker.
Some 26 people were were not meant to be on the premises were found.
"21 of these people were not police officials," he said.
All arrested suspects were charged for trespassing and were served with a R300 admission of guilt fine.
Naicker says 250g of heroin was also found abandoned, while 84 counterfeit DVDs were also found during the operation.
Police say they will not hesitate to act if information comes to light of illegal activities taking place, if if on their own premises.

"It is important that we get our own house in order for the safety of our citizens, as well as our police officers that live in those buildings," said Acting Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
