Drinking water warning for KZN south coast
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
The drought in areas on KwaZulu Natal's south coast has reached crisis proportions with the taps of some communities having run dry while others have been subjected to very salty water.
The Ugu District Municipality says water levels in the Bhobhoyi Dam - which supplies water to most areas under the Hibiscus Coast urban and rural strip - have dropped to their lowest level ever, causing most areas around Port Shepstone to experience constrained water supply.
Areas including Margate and Gamalakhe were left without water at the weekend, while communities living between Hibberdene and Ramsgate received salty water from their taps.
District Mayor Ntombifikile Gumede has cautioned residents against drinking the water from their taps.
"The municipality acknowledges that the water currently produced for these areas is not in a drinkable state, although it meets other compliance requirements.
"The communities are advised to confine the water to all other usages except for drinking. Alternative water for drinking purposes will be communicated with local structures," she said.
