Dramatic rescue in flood-stricken Japan
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Dramatic aerial footage has emerged showing houses being damaged by torrential rains as rescue operations continue in Japan.
An estimated 100 000 people have been ordered to evacuate their homes while others have been reported missing as heavy rains persist in the worst hit city - Joso, north of Tokyo.
Typhoon Etau hit the region on Wednesday and continued until today - where some areas have seen more than 20 inches of rain fall in 24 hours.
Desperate residents stood on balconies and roofs of their homes in an attempt to keep safe and await assistance.
Radiation-tainted water is said to have flown into the ocean after the flooding worsened a contaminated water problem at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says they are on high alert and have prioritised saving the lives of those affected.
