Dogfight billboard NSPCA's publicity stunt
Updated | By News24
An advert for a dogfighting event in Johannesburg, which caused a furore on social media yesterday, was part of an NSPCA advertising campaign.
The organisation initially said it was investigating the billboard, in Bryanston.
In a statement, it then said the billboard was part of a campaign to highlight the "rampant crime of dogfighting in South Africa".
"The NSPCA apologises for alarming the public though thanks them for their passionate follow-ups in this regard.
The travelling A-frame trailer adverts parked at busy traffic spots around Johannesburg advertised "Fight Night", a pit bull tournament. It had a website address and a cellphone number to call for further information.
"In addition to the horrific suffering of the animals involved, the crime has a devastating effect on the people, children and societies where it is happening and the communities who tolerate its existence," spokesperson Wendy Willson said.
They had to resort to "drastic measures".
"Dog fighting also takes place in affluent areas, among educated individuals that hold professional positions and who even contribute to animal causes in their individual capacities," she explained.
