Dog saved from Durban South factory fire

Firefighters say it took at least three hours to contain the fire that broke out at a factory, south of Durban, yesterday.

They found the shoe factory in Mobeni east, engulfed in flames yesterday morning. 


Sheldon Ogle owns a shop a street away.


He says the entire area was covered in black smoke. " We saw this thick black smoke coming up and the flame coming as high as the building. That's when we decided to go out and we went out on the road. That's when we saw flames as well as the factory on fire. We were shocked,"  says Ogle.

Three people were hurt. One of them is a woman who jumped from a window to escape the inferno.

A medic also jumped into action after learning there was a dog trapped in the building.

Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson explains, " Together with the police search and rescue, he located the dog, knocked a hole in the wall and he climbed through the wall to go get the dog.

Jamieson says the dog was pulled out safely, "The dog was watered down and given water to drink as he was extremely hot and dehydrated. Paramedics assessed the animal on the scene and gave him a full bill of health."

Regional Commander at the eThekwini Fire Department - Sbusiso Mkhulisi says the fire caused serious damage. "The roof caved in. There's extensive damage in terms of the heat that spread through these adjacent factories but we managed to stop the spread of the fire," says Mkhulisi.
