The We Dance Again hit maker was arrested on Christmas Eve when he was caught travelling at 200km/h in a 120km/h zone.

Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, was arrested on the N1 highway near the Muraisberg Bridge.

He released a statement on his Facebook page apologising for the incident.

“As some of you may have learned that on the eve of Christmas, 24 Dec I committed an unfortunate offense of driving beyond the recommended speed limit. My occupation as a DJ requires long distance travelling and on that night I was on the way to fulfill another of my work obligations,” he said in the statement.

“While on the way, I received a family emergency call which compelled me to drive back home as a matter of urgency. It was around this hour (23h00) that I regrettably exceeded my speed limit and in hindsight should have been more cautious.

“I am aware that this is the season most rife with road carnage, therefore, adhering to the road laws, taking the necessary precautions in line with our country’s Arrive Alive campaign I’m inclined to express my deepest regrets.”

The DJ added that although he had never committed an offence like this before, he had no intention of sending the wrong message to others.

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said the DJ was arrested along with a number of other motorists during an operation that started on Christmas Eve.

She confirmed that he was caught driving at 200km/h in his blue Maserati.

“He was taken to the Florida police station where he was detained. He received a bail of R800 and is expected to appear in court tomorrow [Monday],” said Mamonyane.
