Disaster teams on alert for veld fires in northern KZN

Disaster officials have been deployed to KwaZulu-Natal-Natal's northern parts following after a new set of fire warnings.

The South African Weather Service has warned of extremely high fire danger conditions for the region on Thursday.
Windy conditions are expected alongside the hot weather.
The department of Cooperative Governance in KZN's Senzo Mzila says the Abaqulusi, Alfred Duma (Indaka and Ladysmith), Big Five Hlabisa, Dannhauser, eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, Jozini, Msinga, Mthonjaneni, Newcastle, Nkandla, Nongoma, Nquthu, Okhahlamba, Ulundi, uMlalazi, uPhongolo municipalities have been put on high alert.

"Some communities in these areas have already been affected by veld fires, and further precautions are necessary to prevent additional damage and ensure the safety of residents.
"Residents are urged to not start fires in open areas or leave fires unattended. MEC Rev. Buthelezi will conduct a visit to affected areas in the Mlalazi and Nkandla local municipalities on 11 July."
