Disabled workers still struggling to find jobs: NGO

On the back of the latest unemployment stats, an NGO working with people with disabilities says the designated group often struggles to find work and many are not considered for positions because of their physical challenges.

Jill Thomas, with the Disabled Workshop Development Enterprise, says many workplaces do not have the necessary equipment or tools, among other things, to aid the disabled.

"The cities that we live in, the countries that we live in, are not built for people with disabilities. If you think of little things, there are still buildings that only have stairs and don't have lifts -- simple things like a sidewalk and trying to get off a curb," explained Thomas.

"A lot more needs to be done socially."

The unemployment rate increased by 0.5% to 27.6% in the first quarter of this year.

Allen Thompson, who is with teachers' union NATU, says many qualified teachers cannot find work because they are disabled.

"We have so many graduates who are disabled and studied under very difficult conditions, but government is failing to absorb them into the workforce. They part of the statistics of people who are unemployed."
