DIRCO: Desire for cash behind drug smuggling arrests
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
A spokesperson for the Department of International Relations and Co-operation says it is concerned by the number of South Africans arrested overseas on drug smuggling related charges.
The department says more than 800 South Africans have found themselves on the wrong side of the law in other countries.
Spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mabaya has been commenting after four women who had been working on a cruise ship were arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle cocaine into the US.
Three of the women are from KwaZulu-Natal.
Mabaya says in many cases it is the desire for instant cash that lands people in trouble.
"This is caused by people wanting easier money and easy things coming their way. There is no other explanation", he said.
"People often say these are victims of human trafficking but the truth is a lot of them have benefited from drugs before and they created an appetite for the money and they cannot stop", Mabaya said.
