Dept seeks to improve eThekwini's air quality system

The Department of Environmental Affairs says the effects of the transport sector, biomass burning and industrial and commercial emitters are major concerns when it comes to the City's atmosphere.
Elevated nitrogen dioxide concentrations have been observed in high traffic areas in eThekwini.
The south of Durban is under the most strain.
The department's Zama Mathenjwa says they want to introduce Air Quality Management Plans for all municipalities, to improve air quality concentrations.

"The system is going to be improved to capture where the sources are - then we can deal with them at that stage. the resources. It's quite difficult - we are short-staffed, we are not physically on site for monitoring.
"We do it once or twice a year which is not good enough. We will be resourcing our air quality unit - so that we can assess our compliance in terms of air quality performance," he said.
