Department moves to contain spread of fall armyworm in KZN
Updated | By Puseletso Peterson
The Department of Agriculture has assigned crop scientists to operate a 'trapping system' to ensure the fall armyworm does not spread aggressively through in the province.
The department confirmed yesterday that the worm has been detected in the Tugela and Umkhanyakude districts of the province. Officials say it has since been controlled but because its been found in two areas of the province there is a chance it could spread further.
The fall armyworm has already been detected in parts of Gauteng and Limpopo. It is described as a threat to food security.
Agriculture's Khaye Nkwanyane is urging farmers to immediately report cases to the department.
"For the fact that it has been identified in two farms in different districts of KZN means the likelihood of the worms spreading is greater. So what we are doing now is tracking them and putting up tracks where they are detected and where they could be going and kill them with our pesticides.
"We will do this so that they do not spread in the manner they have in other provinces," he said.
