Department gives green light to rhino horn auction
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The Department of Environmental Affairs says it's happy for an online rhino horn auction to continue, despite previously refusing to issue a permit.
The world's largest private owner of rhino, John Hume, is set to sell 264 rhino horns during this week's auction.
The High Court in Pretoria yesterday gave Hume the green light to continue with the auction.
The Department's spokesperson Moses Rannditsheni warns that the auction needs to abide by the Environmental Act.
"The seller must abide by the conditions of our Act, which amongst others says we should be allowed access into the online website where we can monitor the people buying for compliance purposes."
He says the people buying the horns also need to be in possession of permits from the department before they are allowed to buy any horns.
