Demolition of Inanda homes raises concern
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Concern around the demolition of houses in Inanda, north of Durban is set to take centre stage this week.
Stakeholders at the request of the Office of the Premier are to meet on Wednesday to discuss the issue and explore workable solutions.
Three houses were demolished in the Amaoti area last week allegedly at the instruction of eThekwini.
Premier Senzo Mchunu has expressed concern over the recent housing issue in the Inanda area.
According to reports over the weekend eThekwini and the Department of Human Settlements have both denied authorizing the demolition of the houses.
Mchunu's office has issued a statement saying it has noted that the destruction of the houses follows a High Court judgment in November last year giving way for evictions.
Mchunu stressed that government fully subscribes to the rule of law but he is hoping to bring the matter to a close in an amicable way.
Mchunu wants stakeholders to find a solution that takes the well-being of the affected families into account and also developmental needs.
ENCA reported yesterday that eThekwini has launched an investigation into who authorized the demolition of the homes.
