Data shows cost of essential food remains high
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
A local NGO says while the average food basket price has come down by R61 in May, the decrease has not yet had a knock-on effect on the cost of core food items.
This is according to the latest data from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group.
It says this month's household food basket costs some R4 137.
It's a 1,5% decrease, and the first one in nine months.

However, the group's Mervyn Abrahams says the cost of core food items like maize meal, rice, flour, beans, potatoes, onions and cooking oil has not come down yet.
"Mostly we have a decrease in some of the prices of fruits and some meat products.
"The core food continues, however, on a very high inflationary level and so we are seeing that the core foods now stand at R2 232.12 at the end of May.
"This is a month-on-month increase of 0,2% or close to R5 on the month previously."
