Yesterday, the Department of Environmental Affairs confirmed to Durban reporters that the landfill was the source of the smell.

Residents of Hillcrest, KwaNdengezi, Shongweni and Kloof have been complaining for months about the health risks they've been exposed because of the chemicals.

The department says it will announce decisions on the matter in the next few days.

The DA's Ann McDonnell and other party members conducted a site visit today:

"I think the community has been crying out for transparency - what is causing the stink, and what are the health risks? So this our whole mission, to pressurize the DEA - who are the competent authority who licenses this site, to force EnviroServ to comply with the people's wishes of knowing what are the health risks for their families," she said.
