DA seeking perjury order against Ramaphosa

The DA is pushing for a perjury order against President Cyril Ramaphosa, saying he gave misleading testimony before the commission of inquiry into state capture.

Last April, Ramaphosa told the commission the ANC deployment committee discussed judicial vacancies but never tried to influence appointments.

But the DA says the minutes of the committee's March 2019 meeting say otherwise.

It says the committee put forward names of judges it wanted to be deployed to higher courts and Constitutional Court.

DA Shadow Minister of Public Service and Administration, Leon Schreiber, says Ramaphosa must be held accountable.

“Today the DA will write to the State Capture Commission, Acting Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, requesting to urgently consider approaching the Constitutional Court to seek an order of perjury against President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“It is now time to hold Ramaphosa accountable like the commission held (former president Jacob) Zuma accountable,” says Schreiber.

“We believe that there is legal precedent for Judge Zondo to approach ConCourt and to make sure that not only the integrity of the commission but the entire South African Judicial system is upheld.”
