DA calls for crime crack down
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The DA in the KZN is demanding the provincial government do more to crack down on crime.
The opposition party staged a protest outside the KZN SAPS headquarters in Durban yesterday. DA leader Mmusi Maimane was among those who launched the Team One SA campaign.
The DA has also given the KZN Department of Community Safety and Liaison and police two weeks to retract a memo it believes was issued to station commanders ordering them not to allow unannounced oversight visits and the release of information to public representatives.
DA provincial leader Zwakele Mncwango says what is of concern is the issue of police resources.
"We need police bosses to ensure that our officers have resources to fight crime. There is no use in saying we have police yet they are under resourced", he said.
Mncwago says they also handed over a memorandum of demands.
"The second aspect of our protect was around a memo preventing provincial members from conducting oversight visits which is against the constitution of this country.
