DA: At least two companies linked for allegedly dumping substances at PMB landfill site
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal is calling on the province's Environmental Affairs Department to investigate the relationship between illegal dumping and the recent fires at the New England Road landfill site in Pietermaritzburg.
The party's written a letter to the department on the blazes that have been flaring up at the site for five years.
The DA's Heinz de Boer says aside from serious environmental damage and air pollution - residents are extremely concerned about their health.

He says they need solutions urgently.
"As a province, we have a responsibility to investigate and prosecute people who might be dumping illegally at the landfill site.
"The municipality has already concluded that there are at least one or two companies that might be dumping illegal substances that are prone to self-ignition if they are exposed to sunlight.
"We want a high level of provincial investigation and just see whether this is true and if this is true that those people are prosecuted," says De Boer.
