CRL says illegal initiation schools must be closed after 34 deaths

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities has recommended that all illegal initiation schools be closed with immediate effect.

This after an alarming number of 34 initiates have died at initiation schools since the start of the December initiation season in the Eastern Cape. 

The CRL held an urgent media briefing following a meeting it had with Traditional Affairs MEC, Traditional leaders and Community leaders this week. 

Chairperson of the Commission David Mosoma outlined some of the outcomes of the meeting.

"All deaths must be accounted for and consequence management applied across the board for those responsible for gross negligence in the initiation schools. 

"As a result, the commission all on the South African Police Services to fast-track the processing of already opened cases to bring those responsible to book and that successful prosecution be publicised to serve as a deterrent."
