#CrimeStats: Durban car theft up a whopping 19 percent

Durban is the country's car theft capital.

The police's top brass revealed the country's crime statistics for 2018/2019 earlier this morning.

Durban Central Saps was the worst performing police station in the country over this period. A staggering 765 cars and motorbikes were stolen -- an increase of 122 cases.

This works out at just under 2.1 cars and motorbikes stolen in the Durban Central Saps patrol area every day.

Berea and Umbilo were the fourth and fifth worst performing stations across the country in this regard.

Some 591 cars and motorbikes were reported stolen in Berea, while 540 were taken in Umbilo.

When it comes to theft out of or from motor vehicles, Durban Central was fourth on the national list, with 1,344 reported cases in the last financial year. That is down 16.7 percent (or 269 cases) year-on-year.

Umbilo Saps was also in the top 30 worst performing stations on a national level. Some 947 cases were reported in its policing precinct last year -- down 2.6 percent.

Umlazi Saps recorded 147 carjackings over the past year, a decrease of 2 percent. It was the worst performing KwaZulu-Natal station in this regard, and the eighth in South Africa.
