CPFs, neighbourhood watch groups prohibited to operate amid lockdown
Police Minister Bheki Cele says Community Policing Forums (CPFs) or neighbourhood watch groups are not allowed to operate during the lockdown.
There have been concerns about criminals taking advantage during this period.
A a briefing in Pretoria on Thursday, Cele said they had been inundated with requests from CPFs wanting to assist the SAPS and the SANDF with patrolling duties.
Cele says for now - only police officers and soldiers are allowed to be on the ground.
"People like soldiers, police, metro police - they have a history, they have something that you call 'vetted and known'. Neighbourhood watch, I don't think they are vetted."
"We are ready to engage with they CPFs - they are doing a good job most of the time, but sometimes themselves they come across as a problem when they get into politics instead of getting on issues on the ground."
