It's expected that during the sitting developments around the virus will be unpacked alongside scientific findings on the newly discovered B.1.1.529 variant which the World Health Organisation has named Omicron.
Today's meeting had been scheduled to take place place tomorrow but with 2 828 new COVID cases recorded just in the past 24 hours it's since been decided it will be held today and chaired by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Today's outcomes will determine if further consultation is required at the President's Coordinating Council level.
The announcement of today's meeting by the presidency also comes as analysts have warned that SA cannot cope with another hard lockdown.
