In May 2020, The World Health Organisation (WHO) issued guidelines stating that governments should see positivity rates of 5% and below for at least 14 days before relaxing social distancing measures or reopening fully.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reports that there were 967 new Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours leading up to Sunday evening.

The institute says South Africa has now officially exited the third wave according to the current definition.

“The national 7-day moving average of daily case numbers, positivity rate and testing rate continue to decrease, with sustained decreases seen in all provinces,” said the NICD in a statement.
