Court orders Eskom to not cut Newcastle electricity supply

The Pietermaritzburg High Court has ordered Eskom not to cut the town's electricity supply, for now. The Newcastle Local Municipality racked up a debt of more than R200 million over several years.

It says some residents and businesses don't pay for services, while it's also faced with a high number of illegal connections.

The power utility had planned to start implementing scheduled power cuts last week. But town officials went to court seeking an interdict.

Tuesday morning's high court order stands until December, when both parties will return to court.
