Court grants interdict preventing 'Mandela Day' name for Midlands marathon
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Sunday's marathon in the Midlands in honour of Madiba is going ahead, but under a different name.
The uMgungundlovu District Municipality has been granted an interdict preventing KZN Athletics from using the name 'Mandela Day' for the race.
It follows a hearing in the Pietermaritzburg High Court last Thursday.
The event's name has now been changed to the ‘Hilton to Capture Site Half Marathon’.
Municipal manager Ray Ngcobo says KZNA was using the name without permission.
"There was an attempt by KZN Athletics to organise a Mandela Day Marathon without the approval of the Mandela Foundation as well as Inkosi Mandla Mandela of the Mvezo Mandela Tribal Authority also without our participation."
KZN Athletics says it's devastated by the court outcome.
Registration for the race will take place from Thursday in Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
