Cost of recent KZN storm damage surpasses R1bn

KZN Disaster Management says the estimated damage from severe storms that battered parts of KZN has surpassed a billion rand.
It's after a Level 4 alert for disruptive rains was issued for the coast of KZN last week Monday.
Areas such as Tongaat, Umgababa, Durban Central, and the western parts of the city were affected.
Communities in Newcastle, Dannhauser, Nquthu, and surrounding areas were also affected
Tornadoes were recorded in Tongaat and Utrecht, leaving 12 people dead.

The Department of Cooperative Governance on KZN’s Siboniso Mngadi says eThekwini metro alone accounts for over R490 million in damages.
"Bridges, community halls, and electricity infrastructure have also been impacted.
“The National Department of Human Settlements will also deliver the first batch of building materials, which will benefit about 674 households at eMagwaveni in uThongathi, north of Durban.
“The Department of Home Affairs deployed two mobile offices to eMagwaveni shelter to assist people who lost their identity documents to apply for new documents. These mobile offices will be moved to all shelters to ensure that no one is left behind," adds Mngadi.
Meanwhile, Cogta Minister Thembi Nkadimeng will conduct an oversight visit to affected areas on Wednesday.
